Background
Larry Lee began his musical journey at the age of seven, studying piano with private instruction in the context of classical performance for over ten years. This early immersion in classical music established strong foundations in technical sensitivity and precision as well as in interpretive and expressive depth.
Larry served as pianist for the UC San Diego Jazz Ensemble during his undergraduate study, where he was mentored by Grammy award-winning producer and arranger Kamau Kenyatta in jazz piano.
In addition to his piano expertise, Larry has pursued a broad academic path at UC San Diego, completing 267 units with a 3.82 GPA. While majoring in mathematics and computer science, he has taken extensive coursework in classical theory and counterpoint, jazz theory and improvisation, acoustics, audio engineering, and digital signal processing.
Artist Bio
Endowed with an upbringing in classical piano, Larry Lee grew up with a range of early influences, whether through the harmonic introspection of Fauré or the technical innovation of Liszt. His personality as a pianist is characterized by an extensive dynamic range, attentiveness to timbre and tonality, and an attraction to tasteful concision.
Having studied jazz piano and audio engineering alongside his mathematics degree at UC San Diego, Larry’s musical and technical choices reflect a thorough understanding of theorization and practice, yet remaining unconfined by historical precedent and academic rules of thumb. His compositional style expresses familiarity with various genres as well as the liberty that arises from intersection. His harmonic sophistication is not without depth and taste, and his harmonic simplicity is not without unpredictability and modernity.
His recordings are indivisible, with each instrumentalist chosen carefully and hence keystone to each record. The rich character of each musician is experienced in each record without compromise to the character of the composition.
